Brahmas over Grizzlies in another U14 title classic.

RAYNHAM – For three seasons the Girls U14 division has been part of the New England Future Stars.

Three years.

Three different champions.

All classic final matches.

The 2016 incarnation saw the top ranked and undefeated Boston Brahmas put their quest for perfection on the line against the Southeastern Grizzlies August 14 at the Raynham IcePlex. Twice they met during the regular season, the Brahmas winning both by a combined score of 8-0. The Brahmas shutout the Grizzlies once again on Championship Sunday, but it was a championship they more than earned with a narrow, 2-0 victory.

From its start, the Girls U14 title match was very much a story about its goaltending. Ellee Kopecky of the Grizzlies and both Averill McCorkle and Ellen Linso of the Brahmas, who split periods in the Boston net, all took their lumps through the game’s first 30 minutes.

In the opening period, it was the Brahmas offense that was featured, Kopecky under fire. In the middle frame, it was inversely so with McCorkle and Linso under siege. Despite the scoring chances in both directions, no goals were yielded by any of the goaltenders. The Girls U14 Championship went to its final period of regulation tied 0-0.

The scoreless tie remained until the middle of the period when the Brahmas’ division best offense finally broke through. Madelyn McLeish putting away the backdoor tap in off a feed from Avalon Morris.

It was the first goal of the contest, coming at 7:02 of the third, and it stood as the championship winner. The Grizzlies continued to pursue in hopes of an upset, the championship not safe until Zoe Tow put in the empty net goal with just six seconds remaining.

The Boston Brahmas claimed the 2016 Girls U14 Championship with a 2-0 victory over the Southeastern Grizzlies.
