Bye still in play as Brahmas top Sabercats.

WEST ROXBURY – With Championship Weekend starting to come into view, a jam remains atop the Girls Varsity division standings as teams continue to jockey for the two automatic byes into the semifinal round. One of those spots remains in play for the Boston Brahmas (6-3-1) following their 4-2 victory over the South Shore Sabercats (0-9-0) on Sunday at Jim Roche Arena in West Roxbury.

It was a fast start for the Brahmas on their quest to victory, Bridget Popkin giving Boston a 1-0 lead at 2:12 of the first period, but the offense then cooled. The 1-0 score remained into the second, where it was the Sabercats turn for the fast start, Caity Hazley drawing the game back to even, 1-1, at the 1:38 mark.

Sunday’s was one of the tightest contests of the summer for the Sabercats, the score staying close for much of game, but they could not catch and pass the Brahmas. Olivia Jordan broke the 1-1 tie with her score at 13:07 of the second and then Kellie Popkin pushed the lead to 3-1 with a goal at 5:53 of the third.

Rivers Morris padded the cushion one more time, her goal extending the Brahmas’ advantage to 4-1 at 12:54 of the third period. The Sabercats had one more push to make, Kiera Foley netting her side’s second at 14:19, but the 4-2 final is as close as South Shore came.

It was the second of a game-high two points for Foley (1G, 1A), who finished tied in that category with Kellie Popkin, also credited with a goal and an assist.
