Duarte, special teams come through for Raiders in 4-2 win.

RAYNHAM – After two tight losses, the Varsity Raynham Raiders (2-1-1) rebounded on Sunday to snap their brief slide, doubling up the Norfolk County Hawks (0-4-1) for a 4-2 victory at the Raynham IcePlex.

The score remained nil through much of the first until the Raiders struck first on a power play goal by Gage Duarte at 10:14. The Hawks, however, responded before the break, Devin Ridgeway tipping in a Scott Baumann shot at 13:54, sending the contest to the break tied 1-1.

Norfolk County’s offense swung for two straight to gain themselves a 2-1 lead, the second goal an unassisted tally by Ryan Carr at 2:05 of the second period. The Raiders, however, had it back tied less than two minutes later, a nice wrist shot coming from forward Zach Morrow. They then re-established their one-goal advantage from the first period on Duarte’s second special teams goal of the day, this one a shorthanded tally coming at 8:05 of the middle frame.

Still in search of their first win, but a much improved Hawks squad, Norfolk County threatened to get the equalizer late in the contest as the 3-2 score held deep into the third period. The Raiders, however, did not yield in pursuit of the win, gaining a little extra room on the scoreboard. With the Raiders hemmed deep in their own zone, Pat Sunderland made a great read too pick off a pass at the blue line. The pick off freed the Raynham forward on a long breakaway and easy empty net goal to seal the 4-2 victory.

Duarte’s two goals led all scorers in the contest.
