Brahmas, Coyotes, Thunder and Raiders claim titles in Revere.

REVERE – The 2015 New England Future Stars season has now come to a close.

Tryouts. Opening Weekend. Three months of regular season play. Finally, Championship Weekend. A quest that began in late January drew to a close over the weekend, the final 10 of a near 350 games, a regular and post-season that saw it all.

On Sunday at the Cronin Skating Rink in Revere, the first set of trophies were handed out as the Future Stars’ Squirt, Peewee, Bantam and Varsity Division Silver Cup Champions were crowned.

The Squirt Norfolk County Hawks were hot entering Sunday’s Silver Cup final against the Boston Brahmas. They had earned a berth in the final game with a magical double overtime victory over the Central Mass Cobras in the semifinals on Saturday. The magic, however, seemed to have been used catching and closing out the Cobras as the Brahmas came out storming to steal the opportunity from the Hawks.

Boston put up a five-spot in the first to assume control of the contest early. A pair from Owen Butler and one each from TJ Birnbaum, Lizzy Greeley and Ryan Benoit netted the Brahmas a 5-0 lead through 15 minutes.

The lead grew to 6-0 on Greeley’s second early in the middle period before the Hawks started to chip away at their deficit. Jack Carosi and Ryan Eldridge came through with scores at 8:20 and 11:03 of the second, respectively, to cut the lead to 6-2 heading into the third.

Norfolk County could not get any closer in the third and then fell farther behind as the Brahmas closed out their 9-2 victory with another three goals. It was the second nine-spot of the playoffs for the Brahmas, who advanced to the finals following a 9-0 shutout of the Natick Chill in the semifinals.

Butler (2G, 2A) and Benoit (1G, 3A) were credited with four points apiece in leading the Boston Brahmas to the 2015 Squirt Silver Cup Championship.

It was near flawless perfection for the 2014 Squirt South Middlesex Coyotes during their run to a Gold Cup Championship, a regular season shootout loss the only blemish on their record. Something of a different tale unfolded as the core of that team moved up to the Peewee level in 2015, until Championship Weekend arrived and their championship form returned.

After a 5-4 victory over the Norfolk County Hawks in the semifinals, powered by a Mike Lynch hat trick, the Coyotes advanced to Sunday’s Silver Cup Championship to face the Natick Chill.

The Chill, who just missed on making the Gold Cup bracket, entered the finals on a roll having beaten the Southeastern Grizzlies 12-1 in the semis, and their good play continued. They grabbed the game’s first lead late in the opening period on an Alex Infanger goal at 10:06. It was a 1-0 lead that looked as if it was going to last into the second until Anthony Attardo beat the buzzer and drew the game back to even with just seven seconds remaining before intermission.

Natick’s lead was not just equalized in the blink of an eye, but became a 2-1 deficit, Paul Magalhaes following up Attardo’s last second tally with an opening minute score in the middle period. Magalhaes had another entry on the score sheet three minutes later as South Middlesex’s lead grew to 3-1. Not to be counted out yet, Oliver King had the Natick deficit back to one with his goal near mid-period, setting up a 3-2 score heading into the final period.

As the second period before it, Magalhaes struck in the first minute of the third to complete his hat trick and give the Coyotes some space on the scoreboard at 4-2. They still had nearly a full period to play, but South Middlesex persevered their lead, repelling any Natick comeback attempts, Coach Larry Parece’s Coyotes once again hoisting a trophy, this time as 2015 Peewee Silver Cup Champions.

New team, new year, same finish for the Bantam Marlboro Thunder.

The Thunder were one of three teams to finish the regular season tied for sixth in the Bantam Division standings and, fittingly enough, they would face the other two on their postseason journey. First was their semifinal matchup with the North Shore Stingrays, who just nicked the Thunder in the season opener, rallying from three down to score a 6-5 victory.

Marlboro opened up a lead against North Shore once again, but this time it held. A 3-1 Thunder lead after two periods closed out with another three goals in the third for a 6-1 finish.

It was a similar performance for the Thunder in the final against the Raynham Raiders, who reached the season’s final day with a 9-7 semifinals victory over the Southeastern Grizzlies. A first period tie was followed by a two-goal lead through two periods and a three-goal third to close things out. Brett Erwin’s three-point performance (2G, 1A) – contributing on all three third period goals – leading the close out for the Thunder.

Robbie Downing (1G, 2A) was also credited with three points in the final for the Thunder.

With back-to-back five-goal victories, Marlboro completed their back-to-back bid, the 2014 Bantam Silver Cup Champions capturing the 2015 Bantam Silver Cup Championship.

An adventurous postseason for the Varsity Division came to a close on Sunday night in Revere, the Raynham Raiders left as the Silver Cup bracket’s last team standing.

Varsity Silver Cup play opened with a pair of semifinal games on Saturday in Revere. The Raiders were the last team standing, but the first team to punch their ticket to the finals. They jumped on the Norfolk County Hawks early in their semifinal and then powered through the second period to victory.

A 4-0 first period lead for the Raiders grew to 9-1 through two before the Hawks closed out the 9-2 decision with the third period’s lone goal. Max Hoffman’s three goals and one assist leading the Raynham offense.

The South Middlesex Coyotes has a similar comfortable victory in the semis in order to advance, closing out the North Shore Stingrays’ season, 6-1.

North Shore did lead through one period, Simon Vinci opening the game’s scoring with a mark just 42-seconds after the opening faceoff. That 1-0 lead disappeared in the game’s second half, however, the Stingrays’ fortunes turning as Brian Fager and Paul Ursino each scored to give the Coyotes a 2-1 lead through two. South Middlesex netting another four in the third to assure their advancement.

Conversely to their semifinal contest, the final started strong for the Coyotes, posting a 1-0 lead through the opening 15 minutes. Similar to the fate suffered by the Stingrays in the semis, however, the Coyotes’ lead evaporated in the second, which came to a close with the Raiders holding a 4-2 lead.

A 3-1 third period favoring the Raiders closed out the season in a 7-3 victory. Raynham leaving the dog pile on top as the 2015 Varsity Silver Cup Champions.
